Turning complex financial information into interactive plans and future scenarios
Overview
Financial planning can involve a large amount of interconnected information. Income, expenses, assets, liabilities, pensions, tax considerations and long-term goals all influence the future financial picture.
We designed a planning experience that brings these inputs together into an interactive model, allowing users and advisers to understand financial positions, explore scenarios and connect planning directly to advice.
The Challenge
Financial information is difficult to understand when presented as disconnected numbers.
The planning experience needed to make it easier to build a complete financial picture, define goals, model cashflow, explore scenarios, understand future outcomes, compare potential decisions and connect planning to financial advice.
Building a Complete Financial Picture
The planning model brings together income, expenses, assets, liabilities, pensions, tax information and financial goals.
Bringing these elements together creates the foundation for modelling future financial outcomes.
Goals-Based Planning
Financial objectives become part of the planning model, creating a direct relationship between what a client wants to achieve and the financial resources available to support those goals.
Cashflow Modelling
Cashflow modelling provides a way to understand how income, spending and financial assets may evolve over time.
The experience can help explore income and expenditure, surplus and deficit, future cash requirements, retirement timelines, changes in contributions and long-term financial sustainability.
Scenario Planning
A central part of the experience is the ability to compare different futures.
Scenarios can include:
Base plan
Adjusted contribution
Different retirement timeline
Stress scenario
Rather than treating a financial plan as fixed, scenario modelling makes it possible to explore how changing assumptions can affect the outcome.
Making Financial Outcomes Visible
The planning experience uses visualisations to communicate cashflow, retirement timelines, asset distribution, risk, differences between scenarios, and surplus or deficit.
The visual layer helps users move from raw financial data to a clearer understanding of potential outcomes.
Comparing Different Futures
Scenario planning allows advisers and clients to look at alternatives side by side. Changing a contribution level or retirement date can affect the longer-term financial position.
By making these differences visible, the planning experience creates a stronger basis for discussion and decision-making.
Connecting Planning to Advice
The financial plan becomes part of the broader advice workflow, connecting planning information with risk assessment, portfolio selection and suitability.
This creates a continuous path from understanding the client’s position to developing and reviewing financial advice.
Risk Within Financial Planning
Risk information is considered alongside the wider financial plan. The platform can bring together the client’s risk profile, goals, financial position and selected investments so planning and investment decisions are viewed in context.
Planning Workspace
The planning workspace provides advisers with an environment for building and reviewing financial plans. It brings financial inputs, goals, models and scenarios into one place.
Turning Planning Into Conversation
Interactive scenarios allow advisers to show how different decisions can affect potential outcomes, making complex financial concepts easier to discuss with clients.
Instead of simply delivering a static projection, the planning experience creates a space for exploration and conversation.
Connected Planning Model
The planning experience is built as part of the wider product ecosystem.
Client Data → Financial Plan → Scenarios → Advice
Financial information feeds into the planning model, the model produces scenarios and outcomes, and those outputs contribute to the broader advice workflow.
Technology
The web application uses React, Vite, TypeScript, Tailwind CSS, Ant Design, React Query, Redux, Recharts, Bun, Express, PostgreSQL, Prisma, Redis and BullMQ.
Recharts supports the visualisation layer required to communicate cashflow, timelines and scenario differences.
Result
The result is an interactive financial planning experience that turns complex financial information into understandable models and future scenarios.
By connecting goals, cashflow, assets, liabilities, risk and advice, the platform makes financial planning a continuous part of the wider wealth management experience rather than a standalone calculation tool.
